This philatelic pane, issued in 1972, features definitive Machin head stamps of Queen Elizabeth II in 2½p (magenta) and 3p (blue) denominations. Accompanying the stamps is an educational text panel titled “Some facts about Wedgwood”, which recounts fascinating details about Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795), the celebrated English potter and industrialist.

The text highlights Wedgwood’s artistic and entrepreneurial achievements, including:

  • The Portland Vase reproduction, with an original copy auctioned in 1971 for £2,000.
  • His collaboration with the Duke of Portland, which allowed him to create his famed jasper replicas.
  • Supplying dairy tiles and ceramics for practical as well as decorative purposes.
  • The creation of a Jasper chess set in 1784, modeled on the actress Sarah Siddons.
  • Supplying royal patrons, including Catherine the Great, who ordered a 952-piece Wedgwood dinner service.
